DTS decoders which do not understand ES process the sound as if it were standard 5.1, and the matrixed audio for the center surround channel is output equally from the two surround speakers (very much as a sound intended to be in the centre of the sound field in a stereo recording is played equally by the left and right speakers).

Because this Onkyo receiver doesn’t process audio it receives via HDMI and merely passes it through, it’s only processing the audio that it gets back from the TV via the Toslink cable. I can’t connect the digital audio source directly from the Roku to the AV receiver because the Roku only has HDMI out. It might be easier to split the signal coming out from the Roku and have 1 to the TV for video and 1 to your receiver for audio. That’s precisely what the splitter would accomplish.

I'm assuming you are asking for the difference between Dolby Digital and DTS, which both can output at 5.1. From what I understand, and am no expert, DTS has less compression than Dolby Digital so in theory it should sound 'better'. DTS tracks are usually larger files and have a higher bit rate as well. I think it also has a lot to do with how the audio was recorded since not all recordings support DTS. If the option was there to choose either, I would listen to both and select the one that sounds best to you.

It was not my intention to heart you and I apologize for that. And you really do not have to punish me for that, by using your dialect to make the things even harder for us, who fight with English as a foreign language. I asked you several times to give us the source of your 'inside' information, instead of only the low hanging fruits (like the right click in YouTube), but I never understood, that you really did it.

Do you have the Samsung 5200 transcoding on the fly and outputting DD 5.1 over HDMI or are you running via optical or coax directly to the Playbar or through a switch of some kind? I've messed with a couple different Sony players and it seems that their transcoding only works for output from coax, but I have a TV that will pass 5.1 through, so would like to output via HDMI. I have a Samsung BD-H6500 and can confirm it transcodes DTS to DD on the fly and sends the output via HDMI.
